Survey Finds 92% of Indian Firms See GenAI Tools as Potential Security Risk

As Generative AI tools gain prominence in India's digital landscape, a new report reveals that 92% of organizations consider GenAI a potential security risk. Despite 95% of Indian organizations using GenAI tools to some extent, 75% admit a lack of skills or talent for leveraging advanced tools like ChatGPT, according to a report by Cloud security provider Zscaler.

The survey underscores the dynamic adoption of GenAI but highlights the need for a sharper focus on both Zero Trust principles and skill development. Worryingly, 22% of respondents revealed they do not monitor GenAI usage at all, and 36% have yet to implement additional security measures related to GenAI, despite having it on their roadmap. Only 30% of organizations in India perceive GenAI adoption as an opportunity rather than a threat, raising concerns about potential risks to business and customer data integrity.

Interestingly, despite mainstream awareness, employees are not the driving force behind GenAI interest and usage, with only 3% attributing it to employees. Instead, 71% cited IT teams as the driving force behind GenAI adoption in India.

Sanjay Kalra, VP Product Management at Zscaler, highlighted the need for organizations to act quickly to close the gap between GenAI use and security, especially with 75% of respondents anticipating a significant increase in GenAI tool interest by the end of the year.
