Sam Altman has made a notable return to the helm of OpenAI, reassuming the position of CEO amidst a whirlwind of recent events. Microsoft, a significant investor in OpenAI, now holds a non-voting observer seat on the company's board.
The newly structured board at OpenAI is led by chair Bret Taylor, alongside members Larry Summers and Adam D'Angelo, the lone remaining holdover from the previous board. Microsoft's substantial stake of 49 percent in the for-profit entity under the oversight of the nonprofit board has been reported by The Verge.
In a memo shared with the company's employees, Altman expressed no animosity towards Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's co-founder and chief scientist, who played a pivotal role in Altman's removal. Despite Sutskever's departure from the board, Altman highlighted ongoing discussions to retain Sutskever's involvement within OpenAI.
Reaffirming commitment to their clientele, Altman conveyed determination to intensify efforts, stating, "The fact that we did not lose a single customer will drive us to work even harder for you."
OpenAI's strategic direction under Altman's leadership involves advancing research plans and amplifying investments in comprehensive safety measures. Altman underscored clarity in their research roadmap and the team's collective motivation to convert the recent challenges into opportunities. Collaborating with Mira Murati, Altman aims to steer OpenAI towards this transformative phase.
Chair Bret Taylor expressed enthusiasm for Altman's return, emphasizing the collaborative leadership of Altman, Mira, and co-founder Greg Brockman in propelling the company forward. Taylor also hinted at assembling a diverse and skilled board aligning with OpenAI's multifaceted mission, with Microsoft's non-voting observer inclusion being a part of this initiative.
Altman's reinstatement as CEO follows his earlier dismissal from OpenAI due to the previous board's loss of confidence in his leadership abilities. Subsequently, Microsoft's Chairman and CEO, Satya Nadella, revealed the hiring of Altman and Brockman to spearhead the company's pursuit of advanced AI ventures within a new vertical.
