In a landmark development for India's electronics manufacturing sector, laptop production has begun in the country, with the Union Minister of Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurating Syrma SGS Technology's state-of-the-art laptop assembly line on Friday.

The new assembly line will produce 100,000 laptops in the first year and scale up to 1 million units in the next 1-2 years. Syrma SGS has four manufacturing units in Chennai, and Unit 3 has started producing laptops, according to the IT Ministry.

Syrma SGS has aligned with Micro-Star International (MSI), a giant Taiwanese technology brand, to build high-quality laptops out of India-both for consumption in India as well as abroad.

In little over 18 months since the launch of PLI 2.0, the first one is now being rolled out out of Tamil Nadu, marking a beginning of the "Made in India" laptop.

The initiative, which is part of the PLI 2.0 scheme for IT Hardware, highlights India's growing capabilities in high-value electronics production and reinforces the nation's self-reliance in IT hardware, said an official statement.

The facility is expected to create 150-200 specialized jobs in electronics manufacturing by FY26, and both for Tamil Nadu and for India as a nation, this will make a huge difference. The job will also bring about a ripple effect by shaping and improving the future workforce in that sector.
