Instagram launches 'Take a Break' feature for teens

Soon after whistleblower Frances Haugen, disclosed internal company research that revealed Instagram's negative effect on teenagers, the photo-sharing platform on Tuesday launched a 'Take a Break' feature for teenagers. Presently this feature is available in a few countries including the US, UK. Many studies earlier have proved that social media applications do affect teenagers mentally.

Presently this feature is available in a few countries including the US, UK. Many studies earlier have proved that social media applications do affect teenagers mentally.

Key Points


1. To stop teens from getting addicted or to prevent overuse of the application, this feature could help. "If someone has been scrolling for a certain amount of time, we will ask them to take a break from Instagram and suggest that they set reminders to take more breaks in the future. We will also show them expert-backed tips to help them reflect and reset," Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, said in a blogpost.

2.The company has presently launched the feature in countries like the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

3. The company also planned to switch off the ability for people to tag or mention teens who do not follow them. Instagram is about to launch tools for parents and guardians as well, early next year so that they get more involved in their teen's experiences on Instagram.
