The current tariff war between the US and China has greatly affected numerous US technology companies, and Apple has been one of the worst-hit companies given its extensive dependence on China for producing iPhones.
To combat this, Apple is fast-tracking plans to produce the iPhone 17 series in India to address increasing demand from the US and local markets.
As per a recent report from Moneycontrol, Apple is planning to make more iPhone 17 Pro phones in India, as customers in both the US and India prefer Pro models to normal models. Foxconn, along with Tata Electronics, has already started trial production of the iPhone 17 series in India.
Even with Apple's aggressive investment and expansion in India, US President Donald Trump was displeased during his visit to Doha. During a short interaction with Apple CEO Tim Cook, Trump said, "We are not interested in you building in India. India can take care of themselves." Nevertheless, this has not stopped Apple's plans.
In the future, as early as 2026, a good chunk of the iPhones sold in the US will reportedly be produced in India. This is partly in response to avoiding increasing US tariffs on Chinese goods. Apple is also reportedly considering pricing models for the iPhone 17 series amid these shifts.
In short, Apple is making a radical change in its strategy, aligning internal changes to its operations with external geopolitical and trade complexities, ushering in a new era to its global manufacturing base.
