With the cricket craze going around in the country, the Department of Telecom had issued a warning on Friday about the existence of fraudsters in the name of Mahendra Singh Dhoni on various social media platforms.
In a communique issued on a certain website, it had announced that fraudsters had been falsely posing as the popular cricketer and former Indian cricket team captain, who approached unsuspecting victims requesting them to send money through Instagram.
In one instance, a screenshot shared by the DoT displayed an Instagram message purporting to be from Dhoni himself, requesting ₹600 through PhonePe under the pretext of being stranded without his wallet on the outskirts of Ranchi and needing fare for a bus journey back home. The message even included a supposed "selfie" of Dhoni for authenticity.
The DoT cautioned the public, emphasizing, "Beware of scammers attempting to deceive you! Should anyone claim to be the iconic @msdhoni in need of bus fare, it's a deceptive tactic you should avoid falling for." sharing the viral post on X that has so far garnered 332.1K views.
“Report them faster than @msdhoni's stumpings on Chakshu at #SancharSaathi,” it added.
DoT’s Sanchar Saathi portal is a web portal serves as a valuable resource for Indian mobile users, facilitating the tracking and blocking of lost smartphones, preventing identity theft, and combating forged KYC, leveraging the CEIR module.
