India's Internet User Base Surges to 936.16 Million, Telephone Subscribers Exceed 1.19 Billion: TRAI Report

By the close of December 2023, the tally of Internet subscribers had surged to 936.16 million, marking a quarterly growth rate of 1.96 percent from the preceding count of 918.19 million as reported by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Tuesday.

Of the total Internet subscribers, the wired segment accounted for 38.57 million, while the wireless segment comprised 897.59 million users.

Breaking down the Internet subscriber base, broadband subscribers totaled 904.54 million, with narrowband subscribers numbering 31.62 million, as detailed in the report.

The monthly average revenue per user (ARPU) for wireless services witnessed a 1.93 percent increase, ascending from Rs 149.66 in September to Rs 152.55 in December on a year-on-year basis.

According to the TRAI, India saw a rise in telephone subscribers from 1,181.13 million (over 1.18 billion) in September to 1,190.33 million (over 1.19 billion) by December, reflecting a 0.78 percent growth over the previous quarter.

The overall teledensity in India saw an uptick from 84.76 percent to 85.23 percent in the December quarter. Urban telephone subscribers rose from 658.46 million to 662.56 million, while rural areas saw an increase from 522.66 million to 527.77 million.

The TRAI report also highlighted that Pay DTH (direct to home) services have garnered an active subscriber base of approximately 63.52 million, complementing subscribers of the DD Free Dish (Doordarshan's free DTH services).
