Apple's rumored foldable iPhone has taken a step closer to coming true. Although the tech giant has yet to confirm its creation, a new report indicates the company has started the early prototyping process of its folding smartphone.
Industry sources indicate that the phone could finish early testing in the end of 2025 and move into the Engineering Verification Test (EVT) phase afterwards.
If things continue as they are, the foldable iPhone could arrive in the later half of 2026.
Apple Enters Prototyping Phase for Foldable iPhone
Citing supply chain sources, Digitimes says the foldable iPhone hit its first prototype stage (P1) in June. Apple is reportedly following its standard multi-stage prototype development process, moving from P1 to P3, before stepping into EVT—a phase prior to mass production. Assuming all stages are proceeding smoothly, the device may enter large-scale manufacturing around mid to late 2026.
Both phases of the prototype are reported to last about two months, with production trials on a small scale being conducted by Apple's manufacturing partners. After such production trials, large-scale assemblers such as Foxconn and Pegatron are likely to determine manufacturing efficiency and confirm yield rates, paving the way for mass production.
Early production estimates are said to put the first wave's shipment volume at about 7 million units. The figure can be revised based on market conditions and demand from consumers.
Foldable iPad Plans Reportedly Paused
Aside from the foldable iPhone, Apple was also said to be eyeing a foldable iPad. But, people close to the situation said, that project has been shelved. The choice is reportedly based on huge manufacturing barriers, specifically flexible display technology, high production costs, and unclear demand within the large-screen foldable market.
Specs and Price Expectations for the Foldable iPhone
Apple's foldable phone is expected to be a direct competitor to top-of-the-line foldables such as Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold series, Google's Pixel Fold, and those of Chinese brands. The new device is reported to cost somewhere in the region of $2,300 (around ₹1,99,000 in India) based on leaks.
Rumors hint that the phone will have an exclusive liquid metal hinge and a 7.8-inch internal foldable display, as well as a 5.5-inch outside cover screen. It could be roughly 9.2mm thick when folded and 4.6mm thick when unfolded. From a security perspective, the handset should feature a side-mounted Touch ID sensor.
Apple's highly anticipated entrance into the world of foldable phones is ready to escalate competition, as the company aims to introduce its signature sophistication and ecosystem consideration to a fast-changing product category.
