Apple Secures Top Position in China Smartphone Market for the First Time in 2023

Competing closely, Vivo, OPPO, and Honor each held a 16% market share, with annual shipments of 44.5 million, 43.9 million, and 43.6 million units, respectively, according to a report from Canalys, a market research firm. Xiaomi secured the fifth position with a 13% market share.

In 2023, Apple achieved a milestone by securing the top spot in annual shipments within the Chinese market, marking the first time the company claimed this position. Apple experienced a modest year-on-year increase of 1%, shipping 51.8 million units and expanding its annual market share to 19%.

Huawei, ranking sixth, witnessed a significant market share increase from 8% in 2022 to 12% in 2023, representing a 48% year-on-year growth.

The latest data for Q4 2023 revealed a narrowed decline in Mainland China's smartphone market, with total shipments reaching 73.9 million units, signaling a year-on-year decrease of just 1%. In this quarter, Apple took the lead by shipping 17.5 million units, marking a 6% year-on-year increase, attributed to a sufficient supply of the new iPhone 15 series.

Huawei, breaking into the top five and securing the fourth position, shipped 10.4 million units in Q4, experiencing a remarkable year-on-year increase of 47%, driven by flagship new products like the Mate 60 Pro with its in-house Kirin chip and innovative features such as satellite calling.

The report anticipates a path of moderate recovery for the Chinese smartphone market in 2024, supported by channel profitability and the introduction of exciting new products.
