Earlier this week, Elon Musk made an announcement that marked a significant milestone for his company, Neuralink – the successful implantation of a brain device in its first human subject. The billionaire entrepreneur expressed optimism about the preliminary results from this groundbreaking procedure.
Founded by Elon Musk in 2016, Neuralink is a neurotechnology company with a mission to establish direct communication pathways between the human brain and computers. The overarching goal is to augment human capabilities by enhancing cognition, addressing neurological conditions like Parkinson's disease, and ultimately forging a symbiotic connection between humans and artificial intelligence.
Elon Musk shared the news on X, stating, "The first human received an implant from Neuralink yesterday and is recovering well. Initial results show promising neuron spike detection."
The technology developed by Neuralink enables individuals to control devices such as phones or computers through mere thought. Musk highlighted the potential impact on users who have lost the use of their limbs, envisioning a future where communication for individuals like Stephen Hawking could be faster than that of a speed typist or auctioneer.
In the preceding year, Neuralink secured approval from US regulators to conduct tests involving brain implants in individuals. The core of Neuralink's technology is the "Link," an implant roughly the size of five stacked coins that is surgically inserted into the human brain. According to a report by AFP, the implantation process is invasive.
Pitchbook, a data company, reported that Neuralink, headquartered in California, had a workforce of over 400 employees last year and had secured a minimum of $363 million in funding. This highlights the considerable interest and support the company has garnered in its pursuit of advancing neurotechnology.
As Elon Musk continues to push the boundaries of innovation, with Neuralink marking a remarkable achievement, he remains the richest person by net worth, reinforcing his position as a driving force in the tech industry.
