The Lucknow Super Giants are all set to rope in former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their mentor ahead of the forthcoming IPL mega auction. Zaheer was part of Mumbai Indians 2022 and has started his third stint with the franchise which has won as many as five titles from that particular phase.
An announcement is likely to be made in the evening at the RPSG Group Headquarters. Zaheer replaces Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir himself had parted ways with Super Giants to join back Kolkata Knight Riders, with whom he won an IPL title, in 2024. Gambhir is now the head coach of India.
Zaheer was the director of cricket for the Mumbai Indians prior to this promotion. The fact that South African fast bowler Morne Morkel has moved to the Gambhir camp means LSG currently do not have a specialist bowling coach. He is also likely to take a role in scouting and player development in the off season.
Prior to this, Zaheer played for three IPL franchises: Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Daredevils. He played a horrendous 100 matches in those ten seasons and stole 102 wickets at an economy of 7.58. His last appearance in the IPL was seen in the 2017 season when he led the Delhi Daredevils.
Currently Justin Langer is the head coach of LSG. Justin Langer, a former Australian opener, took over the reins from Andy Flower ahead of the last season of IPL. He will continue with his Assistants, Lance Klusener and Adam Voges.
