Kane Williamson will not play the second Test against India, New Zealand Cricket announcing on Tuesday that he would continue rehabilitation on a groin strain.
Williamson suffered the injury during the recent Test series against Sri Lanka last month and missed their drought-breaking victory over India in Bengaluru earlier this week.
Williamson was improving, but it's a bit too early to come back into Test cricket for New Zealand, according to head coach Gary Stead.
We're keeping tabs on Kane. He's tracking in the right direction, but isn't yet 100 per cent fit. Over the coming days, we hope to see further improvements, and hopefully, we'll have him available for the third Test. We'll give him all the time he needs to get himself right, but certainly continue to exercise caution," said Stead.
This was New Zealand's first win in India since 1989 and their first success on Indian soil at the fifth attempt, and it means they rise to fourth place in the current standings of the ICC World Test Championship.
India still hold the top spot after losing for the first time since 2018 last weekend, but their lead over second-placed Australia and third-placed Sri Lanka has been trimmed.
New Zealand start a five-day second Test against India on Thursday at Pune.
