WFI Chief Sanjay Singh to Consult Government and Seek Legal Counsel Regarding Panel Suspension

Following the suspension of Singh's panel by the Sports Ministry, which occurred shortly after his election and the announcement of organizing U-15 and U-12 women's nationals in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, Singh expressed his plans to first engage in discussions with the central government before seeking legal advice.

Sanjay Singh, a key associate of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, whose recent election as president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has stirred controversy in Indian sports, has declared his intention to seek legal counsel against the suspension of his panel by the sports ministry a few days ago.

Singh, known to be a close aide of Brij Bhushan, who faces accusations of sexual harassment involving young wrestlers, defended the decision to hold U-15 and U-20 nationals, emphasizing that it aimed to safeguard the future of young wrestlers.

In response to the suspension, the Union sports ministry labeled the decision as "hasty" and stated that it was made "without following the provisions of the constitution of WFI."

"We will speak to the government first and, if that does not work, I will take legal advice to save my federation. The allegation is that we decided to hold the nationals in haste, but it was decided upon after meeting the quorum requirements," Singh stated in Varanasi during an interview with a section of the media.

Singh clarified that the decision was made after a properly conducted annual general meeting where every state had two delegates present for voting. He emphasized the importance of holding the national championships in the current calendar year to avoid detrimental consequences for the wrestlers' future.

Addressing the controversy surrounding the choice of Nandini Nagar in Gonda district for the event, Singh claimed that the town possessed six necessary mats to organize an event of such stature.
