India's top-performing athletes were honored with national sports awards by President Droupadi Murmu in a grand ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan. Cricketer Mohammed Shami and para archer Sheetal Devi received applause as they walked into the ceremony. Shuttlers Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy were awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna for their outstanding achievements in 2023, including winning India's first badminton gold at the Asian Games.

Chess Grandmaster R. Vaishali, the elder sister of R. Praggnanandhaa, received applause for becoming the third woman from India to achieve this feat. Other notable awardees include wrestler Antim Panghal, boxer Mohammad Hussamuddin, and chess coach RB Ramesh.

The awards, including Khel Ratna, Arjuna, and Dronacharya, carry cash prizes. The event celebrated the achievements of India's sporting heroes, recognizing their dedication and excellence in their respective fields.
