India's top-performing athletes were honored with national sports awards by President Droupadi Murmu in a grand ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan. Cricketer Mohammed Shami and para archer Sheetal Devi received applause as they walked into the ceremony. Shuttlers Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy were awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna for their outstanding achievements in 2023, including winning India's first badminton gold at the Asian Games.
The awards ceremony, delayed due to the Hangzhou Asian Games, witnessed 26 athletes and para-athletes receiving Arjuna Awards. Notably, pistol ace Esha Singh, participating in the Asian Olympic Qualifiers, missed the ceremony but secured a spot for the Paris Olympics. The influence of the Asian Games was evident as many medal-winning athletes from Hangzhou graced the ceremony.
Para archer Sheetal Devi, who won three gold medals at the Para Asian Games, received a resounding applause. The 16-year-old, born with a rare medical condition, expressed gratitude as President Murmu presented her award. Cricketer Shami, currently recovering from an ankle injury, was acknowledged for his remarkable performance in the World Cup.
Chess Grandmaster R. Vaishali, the elder sister of R. Praggnanandhaa, received applause for becoming the third woman from India to achieve this feat. Other notable awardees include wrestler Antim Panghal, boxer Mohammad Hussamuddin, and chess coach RB Ramesh.
The awards, including Khel Ratna, Arjuna, and Dronacharya, carry cash prizes. The event celebrated the achievements of India's sporting heroes, recognizing their dedication and excellence in their respective fields.
