The three-week stint of former captain Waqar Younis as advisor on cricket affairs to the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board ended on August 19, according to a well-placed source in the Pakistan Cricket Board.
A well-placed source within the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed to PTI that Waqar had originally been appointed as a consultant for cricket-related matters to the current PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi for the next three weeks.
"Now the party has also advertised the post of advisor on cricket affairs and now candidates who who had applied would be interviewed," the source said.
It is not clear if Waqar has reapplied for the position after the advertisement put up by the PCB. " Apparently, Waqar has not applied in response to the advertisement," the source said. Other more direct sources within the board also said that Waqar, who has appeared in 87 Tests and 262 ODIs for Pakistan had sought a short-term contract instead of a longer one.
Another source noted, "But in his consultancy role, Waqar was clearly not comfortable and apparently some influential people in the board, linked with the Pakistan team affairs and international cricket matters, were also not very cooperative with him."
Waqar was present with chairman Mohsin Naqvi after his appointments but has not been seen since in the office since August 19.
Waugh was likely to be given a field role with the national team at a later stage, if not by the chairman then perhaps by Waqar's replacement, but his brief tenure has recently ended.
