In recent developments, wrestler Vinesh Phogat has leveled serious allegations against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), accusing them of obstructing her participation in the Olympic Qualifiers. According to WFI officials, Phogat's request for accreditation of her coach and physio came after the deadline had passed for submitting entries to the world governing body, UWW. While the federation acknowledges receiving Phogat's request, they maintain that it was submitted post the stipulated deadline. Moreover, WFI highlights that they had already finalized the entries for players, coaches, and medical staff within the specified timeframe.

Phogat is vying for an Olympic quota in the 50kg category at the upcoming Asian qualifying tournament in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Despite her efforts to compete in the 53kg category during the selection trials in Patiala, she faced setbacks and was unable to secure a spot.

Expressing her frustration on social media, Phogat accused WFI officials of favoritism towards certain coaches, insinuating potential tampering with her water during matches. She also lamented the denial of accreditation for her personal coach and physio, emphasizing the necessity of their presence for her performance.

In response, WFI clarified that they have no objections to Phogat traveling with her personal coach and physio, provided she obtains accreditation from UWW independently. The federation underscores their adherence to established procedures and emphasizes the need for compliance with deadlines.

Additionally, WFI disclosed that similar requests were made by other wrestlers, including Deepak Punia, a men's freestyle wrestler, and Greco Roman coach Anil Pandit. However, the federation asserts that decisions regarding such requests are contingent upon directives from the government.

Phogat's allegations come in the wake of her involvement in a protest against former WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexual harassment. Although Singh was granted bail after a case was filed against him, Phogat speculates whether the challenges she currently faces are repercussions of her activism.
