Venus Williams and Serena Williams Return as Iga Świątek Takes on Alexandra Eala at Wimbledon

Serena Williams' comeback to singles competition after four years came to an early end with a first-round loss to Maya Joint.

The spotlight at Wimbledon on Saturday will fall on the return of Serena and Venus Williams as they reunite in women's doubles at the All England Club for the first time since capturing their sixth Wimbledon title a decade ago. The day's schedule also features defending singles champion Iga Swiatek taking on Philippines trailblazer Alexandra Eala, while Grigor Dimitrov and Matteo Berrettini renew their rivalry in the men's fourth round.

Despite suffering a knee injury during that Centre Court match on Tuesday, the 44-year-old has been declared fit to compete alongside sister Venus in the doubles event.

Tournament organisers postponed the Williams sisters' opening-round doubles match until Saturday to allow Serena "as much time" as possible to recover, a decision welcomed by Argentina's Solana Sierra, who will partner Colombia's Camila Osorio.

"It's honestly crazy," Sierra said.

"I never thought I'd get the chance to play against them, and now I have the opportunity to face both of them..

"I'm looking forward to it so much, and I think it's going to be a great experience."

Serena and Venus last contested the women's doubles at Wimbledon in 2016, when they claimed their 14th and most recent Grand Slam title together.

The Polish star now resumes her developing rivalry with Alexandra Eala in the opening Centre Court match of the day.

Eala stunned Swiatek in the quarter-finals of last year's Miami Open before the six-time Grand Slam champion levelled their rivalry with a victory on clay in Madrid a few weeks later.

"She has a tricky game. I can assume that on grass it's even more tricky because of the surface. For sure, she's using her strengths, the change of rhythm and everything," said the six-time Grand Slam champion of Eala.

The 21-year-old Eala has already created history by becoming the first player from the Philippines to reach the third round of a Grand Slam in the Open era.

"She's won a Slam on grass. She's won a Slam on clay. She's won a slam on hard, so, I mean, I'm expecting a great challenge," Eala said of Swiatek.

"But I think I'm ready for it. I'm ready to face it head on."

Grigor Dimitrov and Matteo Berrettini meet in a clash between two players who have battled persistent injury setbacks throughout their careers.

Dimitrov, competing on a wildcard after slipping to No. 146 in the rankings during his injury layoff, earned his place in the fourth round with an emotional victory over Czech youngster Jakub Mensik.

Last year, the Bulgarian was forced to retire with a pectoral injury while leading eventual champion Jannik Sinner by two sets in their fourth-round encounter.

"I just really try to stay in the moment as much as I can, as I said, embrace it, cherish it, do the right things, have the right nutrition, get some rest, enjoy again, then come out there and do what you love doing," said the 35-year-old of being back on court.

Berrettini has also endured a series of injury setbacks but showed encouraging signs earlier this season by reaching the French Open quarter-finals before another injury forced him to retire.

"The love for the sport is the same," he said. "The love for the competition, the love of pushing my limits, it's always the same. I'm 30 now. I'm not 20 anymore."

Saturday's contest will mark the first meeting between Dimitrov and Berrettini since 2019.
