While he was being frustrated with the bat, Babar Azam became a perpetual troll bait on social media. His decision to step down as Pakistan's ODI and T20I captain soon enough gave the trolls something to toy with.
Babar took to X to announce he was resigning from the post in ODIs and T20Is, adding that he had informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the team management of his decision in September.
A few fans then started trolling the cricketer. "Babar Azam stepped down from ODI & T20I captaincy. (sad day for other cricket teams)," one wrote.
Another reacted saying, "Babar Azam resignations: 2. Babar Azam Trophies Won in 6 Tourn: 0."
"Babar Azam resigned as Pakistan captain once more. He is searching for personal development not that of the team," added one of the users.
Notably, this is the second time in less than a year that Babar has stepped down from the captaincy of the senior national men's team. Babar had resigned as the all-format captain after Pakistan's disastrous performance in the ODI World Cup in India in October-November last month.
Earlier, Babar had said that the captaincy had added a huge workload, and thus, by walking away from the captaincy, he would redirect his energy towards contributing towards the team with the bat.
"Dear Fans, I am sharing some news with you today. I have decided to resign as captain of the Pakistan men's cricket team, effective as of my notification to the PCB and Team Management last month," Babar said in a late-night post on X, formerly Twitter.
"It has been an honour for me to lead this team, but it's time for me to step down and focus on my playing role. Captaincy has been very rewarding, but it has added a heavy workload. I would like to focus on my performance, enjoy batting, and spend quality time with my family, which is happy for me.".
Stepping down will mean clarity moving forward and putting more energy into my game as well as personal growth. I thank you for your unwavering support and your faith in me. Your enthusiasm has been so important to me. I am proud of what we have achieved together, and I look forward to continuing my contribution to the team as a player. Thanks for your love and support," he said.
