Shubman Gill reportedly has agreed to play for Punjab in the upcoming sixth-round match for the Ranji Trophy against Karnataka.
It's been since last 2022 for Shubman Gill, which featured him against the quarterfinal at Alur on Madhya Pradesh.
Gill will add much-needed depth to Punjab's side as the senior contributors Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep Singh have been picked by India in T20I for the five-match series against England, which starts January 22 in Kolkata.
Right-hander Gill has stated that he will certainly be available for the Karnataka game, which starts on January 23 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru according to an ESPNcricinfo report.
The 25-year-old's return to domestic cricket comes at a time when the Indian team management has been strict on national players following India's 3-1 loss in the Test series in Australia. It also comes at a time when his poor performance outside of Asia, having averaged just 17.64 in 18 innings since June 2021, is being closely examined.
Gill had a tough time in Australia, where he scored 31, 28, 1, 20, and 13 in five innings after returning from a finger injury that ruled him out of the series opener in Perth. His average in the series was 18.60.
He was also left out of the India XI for the Boxing Day Test, where KL Rahul batted at No. 3, after Rohit Sharma reverted to his opening slot for the second Test after having opened the innings during the second Test.
Punjab's hopes of qualifying for the Ranji Trophy playoffs seem to be pretty slim as they are currently at fifth position in Group A, having won just one of their five games so far.
