Test captain Ben Stokes has not been considered for selection in England's squads for next year's white-ball tour of India and Champions Trophy as Joe Root returns to the 50-over set-up.
The England and Wales Cricket Board said on Sunday that Stokes was left out of the squads because he continued to be assessed after sustaining a left hamstring injury during the third Test match against New Zealand at Hamilton earlier this month, where England lost by 423 runs.
Returning to the 50-over side for the first time since the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, Root is coming back as one of the premier batters, with an average of 47.60 in ODIs. The leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed has been picked only for the T20I leg of the trip, while Root is back in the ODI tour of India.
The fast-bowling side is comprised of Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, who has recovered from a right elbow injury, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Saqib Mahmood, and Jamie Overton, and Sam Curran and Reece Topley miss out.
Adil Rashid features in both squads, as Root, Liam Livingstone, and Jacob Bethell will all be able to look at supporting him in 50-over cricket. Beyond Jos Buttler, the rest of the batting is rounded off by Phil Salt, Ben Duckett, and Jamie Smith, with no role to play for Will Jacks.
These games include five T20Is starting from January 22 up until February 2 in Kolkata, Chennai, Rajkot, Pune and Mumbai and after this, three ODIs in Nagpur, Cuttack and Ahmedabad for which dates have been given starting February 6-12 whereas as far as the schedule goes, the International Cricket Council (ICC) still needs to announce it regarding Champions Trophy.
This will be England's first tour and tournament under head coach Brendon McCullum's tenure as white-ball coach, with the T20I team scheduled to depart for India on January 17.
