India captain Rohit Sharma has revealed he intends to continue playing Test and ODI cricket "for at least a while" following confirmation of his retirement from T20 internationals in the aftermath of World Cup success last month.
He has taken some time off since the win against West Indies. Further, he made himself unavailable for the current T20 series against Zimbabwe, besides missing the forthcoming limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka later this month.
"I just said it. I don't look that far ahead. So clearly, you will be seeing me play at least for a while," the 37-year-old said during an event on Sunday night.
It was announced earlier this month by the secretary of BCCI, Jay Shah, that Rohit was going to lead India in the current World Test Championship cycle and Champions Trophy, scheduled for February-March next year.
Rohit had led India into the 2022 edition of the T20 World Cup, as well, only to lose the semifinals against eventual champions England. It was a year later again under his leadership that India made the final of the 50-over World Cup at home only to be defeated by Australia in the final in Ahmedabad.
Rohit finally ended his T20I career with a record of 4,231 runs from 159 matches, and his scores included five centuries and 32 fifties.
