Pat Cummins Makes History with T20 World Cup's First Hat-Trick in 2024

This is Cummins's maiden T20I hat-trick, continuing his great recent form across international cricket. His final figures of 3/29 ultimately proved crucial as Australia won by 28 runs via the Duckworth Lewis method against Bangladesh at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

Throughout the thrilling Super Eights round of the T20 World Cup, Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins turned up the pace of things with his scintillating hat-trick against Bangladesh, 31, showing that he still had it in the tank. In what happened between Mahmudullah and Mahedi Hasan, there was everything about falling off successive deliveries in the 18th over. He was brought back into the attack in the final over, in which he went on to clean bowl Towhid Hridoy, thereby assuring Australia its seventh hat-trick in T20I World Cups.

Remembering his milestone, Cummins humbly shared, "I had a few hat-tricks in juniors but never for Australia. Ashton Agar and Nathan Ellis have T20 hat-tricks, so it's good to join that club." He expressed just how much this meant to him, as players of the team welcomed him onboard: "Pretty awesome to tick that off. Boys are welcoming me in the club. Good club to be part of."

He thus becomes the third Australian to take a T20 World Cup hat-trick, with Brett Lee having done so against Bangladesh in 2007. Until now, Lee was the solitary Aussie to do so in the history of the tournament. This list was extended in recent editions with Curtis Campher of Ireland joining them in 2021, Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka in 2021, and Kagiso Rabada of South Africa in 2021.

Cummins adds to the long list of these glorious T20 World Cup moments where bowlers, through UAE's Karthik Meiyappan in 2022 to Ireland's Joshua Little in 2022, found their way to etch out memorable hat-tricks during the biggest tournament.
