Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Para-sprinter Preeti Pal on winning two bronze medals in the ongoing Paris Paralympic.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, PM Modi said, "A historic achievement by Preeti Pal as she wins her second medal in the same edition of the #Paralympics2024 with a Bronze in the Women's 200m T35 event! She is an inspiration for the people of India. Her dedication is truly remarkable.
Preeti Pal becomes the first Indian woman in athletics to win two Paralympic medals as she secured a bronze in the 200m T35 event on Sunday with a personal best of 30.01 seconds.
The 23-year-old Preeti had won India's first Paralympic track medal in athletics on Friday, a bronze in the women's T35 100m classification race, with a personal best of 14.21 seconds.
PM Modi on Sunday held a telephonic conversation with India athletes who have clinched a medal in the ongoing event. The athletes included bronze medallists Mona Agarwal, Preeti Pal, Rubina Francis and silver medallist Manish Narwal.
PM Modi congratulated all winners and said that their victories have brought glory to the nation. He also conveyed his best wishes to Gold medalist Avani Lekhara for her future events in the Paralympics, as she couldn't join the call due to the continuation of a sporting event.
India has sent its biggest-ever Paralympic contingent this time, with 84 athletes competing in different disciplines of 12 sports, underlining the fast-growing para-sports community of the country. The fact that India is participating in the Paralympics 2024 in Paris not only increases the number of participating athletes but boosts expectations for more medals as the country exudes enthusiasm to better its Tokyo success.
The recently concluded Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games proved to be a watershed in the Indian history of the games, as the country won as many as 19 medals-five golds, eight silvers, and six bronzes.
