While the Indians had, throughout the series, managed to restrict Australia to within 350, Gabba was the first time the Aussies crossed 350. The hosts scored 369 although the bowling attack was the weakest Indian attack they faced in the last eight Tests against Australia Down Under.

Rohit had got off to a flying start, racing to 44 off 74 deliveries in India's first innings, but then holed out to long on just before tea. However, Sharma said that the shot is his bread and butter stroke and often helps put pressure back on the opposition bowlers.

India lost both their openers early as they went to tea at 62 for the loss of Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma's wickets before heavy downpour caused a deluge in the outfield. While rain stopped, the groundstaff could not drain off the water and make the ground fit for resumption of play.

Chappell, the then Aussie captain, had asked his brother Trevor to bowl underarm to ensure the New Zealand batsmen were unable to hit a six off the last ball in one of the tri-series finals in 1981. It was a move deemed against the spirit of the game. Chappell said that the backlash was too much for him and his family, and taught him a lesson. Paine found himself in a similar position in Sydney when his on-field chatter on Monday with Ashwin got severely criticised on the social media. He appeared next day and apologised.
