Renowned wrestler Vinesh Phogat, a vocal figure in the protest against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, showcased her resilience by defeating Shivanee 11-6 in the 50kg final, following a disappointing 0-10 loss to Anju of Railways in the semifinal of the 53kg category, during the national trials for Olympic qualifiers held in Patiala on Monday.
Anju swiftly secured victory in just 18 seconds.
Vinesh, also contending in the 50kg category, displayed her prowess earlier by triumphing over Nirmala 10-0 in the semis. Later in the evening, she bounced back to conquer Shivanee with a score of 11-6 in the 50kg final.
The event witnessed considerable drama, with reports suggesting that the competition was delayed due to Vinesh's alleged request to participate in both the 50kg and 53kg categories. After extensive deliberation, she was granted permission to compete in accordance with her preference.
In contrast, on the preceding Sunday, Bajrang Punia and Ravi Dahiya saw their hopes dashed for Paris Olympics qualification as they were defeated in their respective bouts during the selection trials for upcoming international tournaments.
