Indian spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma have been given a decree of divorce by the family court in Mumbai on Thursday.
The development has been confirmed by the lawyer for Chahal, Nitin Kumar Gupta, speaking to mediapersons outside the courtroom. "The decree of divorce is granted. The court has also accepted both the parties' joint petition. The parties are not husband and wife anymore," the lawyer Advocate Nitin Gupta stated, ANI reported.
Chahal and Verma were married in December 2020. The couple, as per their petition, had parted ways in June 2022 and submitted a mutual consent divorce petition jointly on February 5, 2025.
Earlier this week, on Wednesday, the Bombay High Court had asked the family court to speed up the decision on the divorce petition, keeping in mind Chahal's impending participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The IPL is scheduled to commence from March 22, and Chahal is a member of the Punjab Kings team.
Concurrently, the High Court waived the obligatory six-month cooling-off period, which otherwise is a requirement under the Hindu Marriage Act before a divorce could be granted. The couple had jointly filed the petition to waive the same, alleging their divorce was mutual and they sought early disposal of the same.
The couple had already made a challenge to a family court order on February 20, which had declined to waive the cooling-off period. A six-month cooling-off period is provided under the Hindu Marriage Act to provide time to couples to reconsider reconciliation. The family court, however, had invoked partial compliance with the terms of their divorce agreed upon, namely regarding alimony. Chahal had deposited just half of the Rs 4.75 crore agreed upon, depositing Rs 2.37 crore, and the court quoted a report of a marriage counselor that stated partial compliance with mediation efforts.
Even so, the High Court held on Wednesday that there had been adequate compliance with the terms of consent since the second half of alimony was payable only after the decree of divorce was granted.
