Novak Djokovic became history after recording his 411th ATP Masters 1000 match win, surpassing Rafael Nadal's then-record 410 wins, while recording his convincing 6-1, 6-0 third-round win over Argentina's Camilo Ugo Carabelli at the Miami Open.
Coming into the tournament with 409 Masters 1000 victories, Djokovic was behind Nadal by a single victory, but he leveled the field by defeating Rinki Hijikata in the first round. His win against Carabelli broke the deadlock and set a new record for most match victories in Masters 1000 series history, which started in 1990.
"I'm proud to have achieved yet another milestone and set another record," Djokovic declared after the match. "There's always something on the line every time I go onto the court, and that maintains my drive to do well at tournaments."
The victory is especially notable as it was close to 20 years since Djokovic achieved his initial Masters 1000 title, which was in Paris in 2005 when he beat Victor Hanescu. Since then, the 37-year-old Serb has collected an incredible 40 Masters 1000 titles, with the initial one in Miami in 2007. He also became the first and lone player to accomplish all nine of the Masters 1000 events in 2018, and in 2020 had won every event at least twice. His master record is 411-91 in Masters 1000 events as indicated by the ATP Win/Loss Index.
As Djokovic looks to win his seventh Miami Open, a record that would tie him with Andre Agassi for the most titles in tournament history, he will next play 23-year-old Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the 15th seed, in the round of 16.
Djokovic is also pursuing his first Masters 1000 title since his Paris win in 2023.
