Carlos Alcaraz was defeated 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 by Belgium's David Goffin in the second round of the Miami Open on Friday (local time). Goffin broke the second seed in both sets and won on his second match point when Alcaraz, sliding on the court, could not return a perfectly placed forehand into the corner by Goffin.
Goffin's next challenge will be American Brandon Nakashima, who defeated Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Elsewhere, six-time Miami Open winner Novak Djokovic returned to the tournament in style with a dominant 6-0, 7-6(1) win over Australia's Rinky Hijikata, advancing to the third round. This was Djokovic's first Miami appearance since 2019 and also his 410th ATP Masters 1000 victory, tying Rafael Nadal for the most career wins in the series. "I wanted to make a statement to myself and to others, as well, that I'm still able to play on a high level," Djokovic told reporters.
Meanwhile, Russian seventh seed Daniil Medvedev, the last year's Miami champion and off a semifinal appearance at Indian Wells, was surprisingly eliminated in the first round, defeated 6-2, 6-3 by Spain's Jaume Munar.
Other early results included past Miami finalists Casper Ruud and Grigor Dimitrov going through, as Australian Nick Kyrgios, who had earned his first victory since 2022 earlier this week, lost 7-6(3), 6-0 to Karen Khachanov.
Among the women, teenager Mirra Andreeva made her Miami Open debut after capturing the opening half of the Sunshine Double at Indian Wells, posting a 6-0, 6-2 win over Veronika Kudermetova. Andreeva's next opponent will be Doha champion Amanda Anisimova.
Poland's second seed Iga Swiatek further extended her good form, beating Caroline Garcia 6-2, 7-5, her second victory over Garcia in consecutive tournaments. Swiatek will next play Belgian Elise Mertens after Mertens beat Peyton Stearns 6-4, 6-1.
Australian Open title holder Madison Keys made it through with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Armenia's Elina Avanesyan. She will face Filipino wildcard Alexandra Eala next, who beat 25th seed Jelena Ostapenko 7-6(2), 7-5.
Former US Open winner Emma Raducanu also made it through, taking a hard-fought 7-6(6), 2-6, 7-6(3) victory over Emma Navarro. Other women making it through were Spain's 10th seed Paula Badosa and Czech 15th seed Karolina Muchova.
