Senior batsman Virat Kohli overhauled former skipper MS Dhoni to become the second-most capped international cricketer for India across formats during the first Test against New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Kohli played his 536th international game when he turned out here on Thursday. Dhoni, meanwhile, played for India in 535 international games between 2004 and 2019.
From the fact that he made his international debut in an ODI in Sri Lanka in 2008, Kohli has played 115 Tests, 295 ODIs, and 125 T20Is and scores 27,041 international runs. He also captained India in 213 matches-including 68 Tests, 95 ODIs, and 50 T20Is.
Kohli is now only after Sachin Tendulkar who wore 664 caps, playing for India between 1989 and 2013, and is also the record holder for the most. Among active cricketers, Kohli is followed by India captain Rohit Sharma, with 486 caps, and Ravindra Jadeja, with 346 caps.
This means he is tied for eighth on the list with 116 caps in Test appearances for India, while he amassed 8,947 runs in the longer format, just short of 53 runs from becoming only the fourth Indian to complete 9,000 runs in Tests after Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar.
And Kohli is now the quickest man ever, apart from six players with a least 500 Tests, to score 27,000 international runs on day four of the second Test against Bangladesh last month when he eclipsed Tendulkar's record of 623 innings as he did it in just 594. Kohli is now the only cricketer, apart from McCabe and Stuart Law in both forms, to finish 27,000 international runs in under 600 outings.
