England batter Joe Root matched Steve Smith and Kane Williamson by scoring his 32nd Test century against West Indies on day four of the ongoing second Test at Trent Bridge on Sunday.
Root's 32nd Test century came off the 158th ball of his innings during England’s second innings in Nottingham. He scored 122 runs from 178 balls, hitting ten fours, which helped the hosts surpass 400 runs. This century marks his 19th on home soil.
With this achievement, Root has equaled the Test century count of Australia's Smith and New Zealand's Williamson, as well as former Australia captain Steve Waugh, who also scored 32 centuries in the format.
This milestone arrived in Root's 142nd Test, moving him just one century behind Alastair Cook, who sits top of England's all-time list with 33 centuries. It was the second time he had reached a hundred in Tests in 2024, after his unbeaten 122 against India in Ranchi in February.
The right-handed batter has also become the eighth-highest run-scorer in Test cricket, going past Mahela Jayawardene from Sri Lanka who has 11,814 runs to his name and West Indies' Shivnarine Chanderpaul who scored 11,867 runs. Now, Root has 11,940 Test runs at an average of 49.95, with 32 centuries and 62 fifties.
