In a compelling display of resilience, India's batting lineup, with the exception of Ravichandran Ashwin, showcased promising starts. However, it was K.L. Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja who stole the spotlight, both smashing half-centuries to propel India to a commanding first-innings lead of 175 runs. The second day at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium concluded with India standing at 421/7 after 110 overs.
Starting the day 127 runs behind England's total of 246, India faced an early setback with the departure of Yashasvi Jaiswal for 80 in the opening over. K.L. Rahul, however, played a stellar innings, registering his 14th Test fifty with a well-crafted 86 off 123 balls. His innings, marked by patience and ten boundaries, significantly contributed to India's dominance.
Ravindra Jadeja continued the momentum, taking charge of the scoring as he reached his 20th Test fifty and remained unbeaten at 81 off 155 balls by the end of Day Two. Partnering with Axar Patel (35 not out off 62 balls), Jadeja stitched an unbroken 63-run partnership for the eighth wicket, extending India's lead beyond 150.
Despite the pitch offering turn throughout the day, England's spinners struggled with consistency in line and length, allowing India to dictate play. Ben Foakes' dropped chance off Rahul proved costly, as India seized control.
Joe Root, who didn't bowl on the first day, made an impact by dismissing Jaiswal, but Rahul's resilience and Jadeja's aggressive intent ensured India's dominance. Rahul's fifty in his 50th Test match showcased his adaptability against spin, while Jadeja capitalized on England's inconsistent bowling.
England managed to exert some control after Rahul's departure, but Jadeja and Axar's partnership thwarted their efforts. Jadeja's 20th Test fifty and Axar's aggressive strokes ensured India's position of strength.
With three wickets in hand and Jadeja and Axar at the crease, India aims to further extend the lead on Saturday, posing a significant challenge to England's bowling attack.
Brief scores:
England 246 trail India 421/7 in 110 overs (K.L. Rahul 86, Ravindra Jadeja 81 not out; Joe Root 2-77, Tom Hartley 2-131) by 175 runs.
