Ex-Team India cricketer David Johnson died after falling from the fourth floor of his apartment at Kothanur here on Thursday. The police have launched an investigation in this regard and claimed that according to initial reports, it was a case of suicide. He was 52 and was brought to the hospital but declared brought dead.
Sources close to him revealed that Johnson had been suffering from depression, which had become too difficult to bear over the past one year due to health problems; he was recently admitted to the hospital. The Kothanur police are currently investigating the reasons behind his sudden death and are waiting for an official statement from the authorities.
Another stalwart of Indian cricket, Anil Kumble, condoled the passing away of Johnson, remembering him warmly as "Saddened to hear of the passing of my cricketing colleague David Johnson. Heartfelt condolences to his family. Gone too soon, 'Benny'!
Born on October 16, 1971, in Arsikere, Karnataka, Johnson was a fast bowler of great repute. For India against any opposition, he had played two Tests in 1996, taking three wickets. At the domestic level, he had taken 125 wickets for Karnataka in 39 first-class matches. One of his great achievements is that he bowled at a speed of 157.8 km/h in a Test against Australia.
Now the great cricketer Johnson is no more, and the cricketing fraternity is in mourning. His memory now recalled is of sporting glory and all that he did for the game.
