Cricketer Gautam Gambhir made a public plea to BJP President J.P. Nadda on Saturday, expressing his desire to step back from his political responsibilities in order to refocus on his cricketing career.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Gambhir stated, “I have requested Hon’ble Party President @JPNadda ji to relieve me of my political duties.”
He further extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, saying, “I sincerely thank Hon’ble PM @narendramodi ji and Hon’ble HM @AmitShah ji for giving me the opportunity to serve the people. Jai Hind!”
Joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on March 22, 2019, Gambhir contested from East Delhi constituency in the 2019 general elections, emerging victorious with a margin of 695,109 votes against opponents Atishi Marlena and Arvinder Singh Lovely.
His contributions to cricket were also recognized by the Government of India in 2019 when he was honored with the Padma Shri, the nation's fourth-highest civilian award.
Notably, Gambhir led Kolkata Knight Riders to victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL), clinching titles in 2012 and 2014 under his captaincy.
As he transitions back to focusing on cricket, Gambhir is set to take up the role of mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the upcoming Indian Premier League season.
