England Penalised for Over-Rate at Lord’s, Drop to Third in World Test Championship Standings

The penalty has reduced their tally from 24 to 22 points, and their points percentage has decreased from 66.67% to 61.11%.

England lost two points in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points table because of a slow over rate in their heart-stopping 22-run victory against India in the third Test at Lord's.

The penalty has reduced their tally from 24 to 22 points, and their points percentage has decreased from 66.67% to 61.11%.

This adjustment has resulted in them being catapulted from second place to third place in the rankings, now behind Australia and Sri Lanka.

In addition to the points deduction, the England squad has been charged 10% of their match fees for not keeping the over rate in check during the game.

As per Article 16.11.2 of the playing conditions of WTC, the teams are deducted one point per over they are short after considering all the time allowances.

England captain Ben Stokes accepted the offence, which resulted in no need for a formal hearing.

The third Test, which tilted the series in England's direction with a 2-1 advantage, was an engrossing and emotionally charged contest. The atmosphere was tense throughout, with players constantly getting involved in fiery face-offs, particularly during the latter stages of the match. The Test had outstanding performances, such as Jofra Archer's hot-blooded pace spell, centuries by Joe Root and KL Rahul, and a magnificent five-wicket haul by Jasprit Bumrah.

The battle grew more fierce after both teams had left the first-innings scores of 387 apiece, which was to be followed by an exciting second-innings duel. India were given 193 runs to chase and battled bravely, taking the game into the last session of day four. Key lower-order partnerships headed by Ravindra Jadeja, who combined well with Nitish Kumar Reddy, Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj, kept India in the running.

But England's Shoaib Bashir, struggling with a broken finger on his left hand, put the seal on the win by sending Siraj packing in style, leaving India devastated.

Since the injury, Bashir has been kept out of the rest of the series. Liam Dawson has been drafted in as his replacement for the fourth Test, which will start on July 23 at Old Trafford.
