Dean Elgar Announces Retirement from International Cricket Post South Africa's Test Series Against India

Expressing gratitude for his cricketing journey, Elgar acknowledged the privilege of representing his country for over a decade, deeming it beyond his wildest dreams.

Dean Elgar, the seasoned opening batter of South Africa's cricket team, has announced his retirement from international men's cricket after a remarkable 12-year career. His decision will mark the culmination of his journey in a Test series against India, to be played at SuperSport Park in Centurion from December 26 to 30 and at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town from January 3 to 7.

Expressing gratitude for his cricketing journey, Elgar acknowledged the privilege of representing his country for over a decade, deeming it beyond his wildest dreams. He reflected on the incredible experience and learning curve throughout his tenure.

Having appeared in 84 Tests and eight ODIs, Elgar has amassed 5146 runs in Test cricket at an average of 37.28, featuring 13 centuries, including a career-best score of 199 against Bangladesh in 2017.

Elgar announced, "The Indian home series will be my last, as I have made the decision to retire from our beautiful game. A game that has given me so much. The Cape Town Test will be my last, my favorite stadium in the world."

Expressing gratitude to Cricket South Africa for their investment and support since his U18 days, Elgar also thanked teammates, coaches, and fans for their unwavering support and contributions to his career.

His captaincy from May 2021 to January 2023 led South Africa to significant achievements, notably securing a third-place finish in the ICC World Test Championship with a significant series win against India in January 2022.

Enoch Nkwe, CSA's Director of Cricket, praised Elgar's resilience and leadership, acknowledging his old-school approach to the game and his fearlessness against any opposition.

CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki extended appreciation for Elgar's services, highlighting his determination and grit as qualities that resonated with all South Africans. He commended Elgar as a true ambassador for Cricket South Africa and wished him success for the future.
