'Ben Stokes skipping Men’s T20 World Cup not a massive surprise' Michael Atherton on Ben Stokes

"It's not a major shock, considering he postponed his surgery for the 50-over World Cup. He would have undoubtedly been selected. His priority is reclaiming his all-rounder role in the Test team, especially with England's crucial 2025 schedule against India and Australia," remarked Atherton on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast.

Michael Atherton, former England captain, expressed little surprise at Ben Stokes ruling himself out of contention for the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup, given his ongoing recovery from knee surgery. Stokes announced his decision on Tuesday, stating his focus would be on England's Test series against West Indies and Sri Lanka starting in July.

Speaking on Stokes' value across formats, Atherton noted, "In T20 cricket, where opportunities to shine are limited due to its brevity, his absence might not be felt as strongly. England might look to infuse fresh talent into their T20 and 50-over squads."

Stokes played a pivotal role in England's victorious 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup campaign, but his absence for the upcoming edition is seen as a setback by Nasser Hussain, former England skipper. "While not unexpected, it's a loss. Stokes' presence is invaluable, especially in high-stakes matches. England's white-ball setup, though, is evolving," Hussain stated.

Ollie Robinson, a fellow fast-bowler, believes Stokes' decision to prioritize Test cricket is sensible. "His dedication to England is unquestionable, and his aim to return at full strength for the home Tests is commendable. Having the best version of Ben Stokes benefits England," Robinson emphasized.

England commences their title defense against Scotland on June 4 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, followed by matches against Australia, Oman, and Namibia before the knockout phase.
