BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia categorically condemned Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed's remark on India skipper Rohit Sharma as "really unacceptable."
The row came after Shama posted on X (formerly Twitter) during India's Champions Trophy Group A clash against New Zealand, calling Rohit a "fat sportsman" and targeting him as an "unimpressive captain."
Saikia articulated his dismay in that such comment from a political leader was all the more wrong considering that Team India was training for the semi-final of one of the important ICC tournaments. He was aghast with the comments and stressed the demand for respect especially at a juncture where the Indian cricket team was having a good time. He additionally stated that BCCI would conduct an inquiry on the issue.
The comments attracted a lot of criticism from all sides, and the Congress party then ordered Shama to remove her post.
On the field, India performed well, with Varun Chakaravarthy's incredible five-wicket haul propelling them to a 44-run victory against New Zealand and a spot atop Group A. India is now unbeaten in the tournament and will face Australia in a replay of the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, which India lost.
