Bajrang Punia Leaves Padma Shri Award Outside PM's Residence

Expressing his discontent over the current situation in the wrestling body, Punia conveyed his dissatisfaction through this gesture.

Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia made a strong statement by returning his Padma Shri Award following the appointment of Sanjay Singh, an aide of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, as the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). In a symbolic act of protest, Punia placed the prestigious award near the footpath outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence after being stopped by Delhi Police when attempting to reach the PM's residence.

Expressing his discontent over the current situation in the wrestling body, Punia conveyed his dissatisfaction through this gesture. He asserted his disappointment in the management and administration of the sport and its impact on wrestlers, emphasizing the need for accountability and respect, especially toward female wrestlers.

In a letter addressed to PM Modi, Punia elaborated on his decision to return the Padma Shri Award. He highlighted the insult faced by female wrestlers and the inability of the wrestling community to address this issue. Feeling morally conflicted, Punia expressed his concern about living with the weight of such disrespect throughout his life.

However, despite Punia's strong stance, the Sports Ministry commented that his decision to return the award is a personal one. The ministry acknowledged the fairness of the WFI elections but expressed intentions to persuade Punia to reconsider his decision, indicating a willingness to engage with him on this matter.

Punia's actions signify a broader call for accountability and respect within the wrestling community, prompting discussions not only on administrative transparency but also on the treatment of athletes, especially women, in the sport.
