Ahead of 2nd T20I, Samson's Inconsistency and Tilak's Approach Come Under Scrutiny

The opening match of the five-game series was abandoned after India posted 189 for 7 at Chester-le-Street in Durham, powered by half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and captain Shreyas Iyer.

Sanju Samson will be under mounting pressure to produce a meaningful innings when India take on England in the second T20 International on Saturday, with teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi waiting in the wings and intensifying the competition for a place in the playing XI.

As the series moves to its next phase, much of the spotlight will remain on Samson and whether he can hold off the growing challenge posed by 15-year-old Sooryavanshi, whose impressive rise has sparked calls for an international debut.

Had circumstances been different, Samson's three consecutive match-winning performances during India's successful T20 World Cup campaign might have guaranteed him a longer run in the side. However, with Indian cricket unearthing a generational talent in Sooryavanshi, the wicketkeeper-batter now has little room for error, and his World Cup exploits alone may not be enough to secure his place.

Adding to the pressure, Abhishek Sharma has strengthened his position at the top of the order with scores of 49 and 59 in two of India's last three matches, leaving Samson with an urgent need to contribute significantly.

The opening game did little to ease those concerns. Samson struggled for fluency, managing just one run from seven deliveries, and never appeared willing to adopt the high-risk, high-reward approach expected in the shortest format.

His technical shortcomings against seam movement have also remained a concern. Ireland pacer Jai Moondra, originally from Tonk in Rajasthan, exposed those weaknesses in successive matches by consistently extracting movement off the pitch.

Samson's career has frequently been marked by isolated big scores surrounded by a string of modest returns, a pattern that has continued to hamper his progress.

Although the Indian team management remains reluctant to rush Sooryavanshi into international cricket, the 15-year-old may not remain on the sidelines for much longer if Samson's struggles continue over the next couple of matches.

Samson is not the only batter under scrutiny. Tilak Varma's conservative approach during the middle overs has also emerged as a concern for the Indian camp.

The left-hander has found it difficult to accelerate once spinners enter the attack or seamers reduce their pace, limiting his impact during the latter stages of the innings.

In 12 T20 Internationals in 2026, Varma has managed only 12 sixes — an average of one per game.

For a player viewed as a finisher, that return is considered below expectations.

India are unlikely to make changes to their bowling attack, with the Old Trafford surface expected to offer some assistance to wrist spinners.

Interestingly, the best bowling figures recorded in a T20 International at Old Trafford belong to India's Kuldeep Yadav, although he is not part of the current squad.

England, meanwhile, will rely on a formidable batting unit led by captain Harry Brook, with Phil Salt and Tom Banton expected to provide an aggressive start.

The hosts have also included fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue in their playing XI.

Even so, the biggest talking point ahead of the contest remains Sooryavanshi's potential debut, with the question of whether India will hand the teenager his first international cap continuing to dominate pre-match discussions.
