1st Test: Zakir and Shadman Steady Bangladesh at 56/0 at Tea, Chasing 515

Zakir kick-started Bangladesh's chase with two boundaries off Jasprit Bumrah in the very first over. Shadman followed up with a square punch for four off Mohammed Siraj, and Zakir hammered him for a six and two fours. Shadman then cut Akash Deep for a boundary, while Zakir struck Ravichandran Ashwin for a boundary over long-on before tea was called.

Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam remained unbeaten on 32 and 21 respectively, taking Bangladesh to 56/0 at tea on day three of the first Test against India at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday. Earlier in the session, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant both scored centuries, as India declared at 287/4.

Much earlier, following a first-innings duck, Gill was responsible for spearheading India's counterattack with an unbeaten 119 comprising ten fours and four sixes. Pant, on Test return after 637 days, stroked an unbeaten 109. This innings saw him hit 13 fours and four sixes. That has made Pant equal MS Dhoni's record for joint-most hundreds by an Indian wicketkeeper in Tests.

The pair then rained on the Bangladesh bowlers' parade with a 167-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Pant began the second session by slapping Shakib Al Hasan for a six and sweeping him for four. Cutting Mehidy Hasan Miraz for four more and hitting two more boundaries, Pant brought up his hundred in 124 balls. Falling to Mehidy in a caught-and-bowled dismissal, Pant left the field to a standing ovation from the 13,501 patrons.

Gill capitalised on Shakib's poor deliveries as he hit back-to-back boundaries and went to his third Test hundred in five matches from 161 balls. KL Rahul hit four boundaries in his 21 not out before Rohit Sharma declared India's innings.

Brief scores: India 376 and 287/4 dec in 64 overs (Shubman Gill 119 not out, Rishabh Pant 109; Mehidy Hasan Miraz 2-103) lead Bangladesh 149 and 56/0 (Zakir Hasan 32 not out, Shadman Islam 21 not out) by 459 runs.
