A two-day special session of the West Bengal Assembly would begin on September 2, which would try to pass a legislation for the death penalty for rapists and murderers.
The decision to hold this special session of the Assembly was taken in the state committee meeting presided over by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday.
We will bring a bill within 10 days providing for death penalty for rapists and murderers. If the Governor does not give his assent to the bill, we will start an indefinite movement in front of Raj Bhavan," Chief Minister Banerjee said. "That bill has to be passed-this time nobody will be allowed to get away with the rapists. Why should the rapists not get death penalty?
She made these remarks during the foundation day event of TMCP.
The push comes amid criticism of the state administration, which has been very severely criticized in the past few weeks ever since the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The administration has been accused of trying to bury the matter. The Central Bureau of Investigation is currently probing two separate investigations, acting upon directions from the Calcutta High Court, for the rape and murder case and alleged financial misappropriation in the medical college.
