On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered touching tributes to Veer Savarkar, a colossus of Hindutva, on his birth anniversary.
He said the country will never forget Savarkar's extraordinary valour and tireless struggle.
Modi eulogized Savarkar as a committed "son of Mother India," emphasizing that even the traumatic tortures of British colonial authorities could not demoralize him from serving the nation. He further stated that Savarkar's selfless sacrifices and devotion are still inspiring the country's path towards a developed India.
Savarkar was born in Maharashtra in 1883, and he promoted revolutionary methods to secure freedom from British occupation before facing brute imprisonment in the Andaman Islands.
Hailed as a hero by Hindu nationalists, Savarkar is recognized for developing the political philosophy of Hindutva and was also a successful writer and poet.
Whereas secular parties such as the Congress have been critical of his spreading of Hindutva, Savarkar is a revered and valued member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
