The Prime Minister called Sunak a true Indian friend who is enthusiastic about boosting Indian-UK connections.

On Tuesday, former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his family received Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. A broad agenda was covered in which the excellent rapport between the two countries was a highlight.

The Prime Minister called Sunak a true Indian friend who is enthusiastic about boosting Indian-UK connections.

Posting his thoughts on X, PM Modi said, "Delighted to meet former UK PM, Mr. Rishi Sunak and his family! We had a great discussion on many topics. Mr. Sunak is a wonderful friend of India and is keen on even closer India-UK relations."
 

Earlier during the day, Sunak and Nirmala Sitharaman, the Finance Minister, had also exchanged views on how financial cooperation and commercial links between India and the UK could be enhanced. They discussed deepening economic growth and strengthening market-based financial ties. Sitharaman pointed out how the Global South could ultimately gain by leveraging the use of the Commonwealth as a facilitator to put issues of common interest in front of the G7.

With his wife Akshata Murty and daughters Anoushka and Krishna, Sunak went to Parliament House to inspect it. He was accompanied by Sudha Murthy, an MP in Rajya Sabha. They were received at the ancient complex by Rajya Sabha Secretary Generals P.C. Mody and Lok Sabha Secretary Generals Utpal Kumar Singh.

Sunak family toured the important parts of the Galleries, Chambers, Constitution Hall, and Samvidhan Sadan as a part of the tour of Parliament House, a building of architectural wonder.

On Monday, Sunak also met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi. Grateful for the meeting, Jaishankar tweeted on X, "Nice to meet former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Delhi today. Appreciate his constant support for strengthening India-UK relations."

Sunak, born in Southampton to Indian-origin parents and being of Punjabi descent, was the first Indian-origin prime minister of the United Kingdom from 2022-2024. Sunak has always championed India as the UK's "indispensable partner" in various areas of bilateral partnership.

Sunak recently treated his family to a tour of the legendary Taj Mahal on February 15, 2025, while he was in India.
