Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath came down heavily on the SP in relation to the gang rape of a 12-year-old girl in Ayodhya.
The CM informed the UP Assembly, "Moin Khan, an active SP member and a member of the Ayodhya MP's team, has been implicated in the assault of a 12-year-old girl from one of the most marginalized communities. However, the accused is still spotted accompanying the SP MP, and no action has been taken by the party.".
He said, quoting from the NCRB, that from 2016 to 2024, there were steep fall-offs in crimes such as dacoity by 86.47 percent, robbery by 78.17 percent, murder by 43.21 percent, and kidnapping for ransom by 70 percent.
He also furnished data on crimes against women, showing a reduction in dowry deaths by 17.43 per cent, rape cases by 25.30 per cent, outraging modesty by 16.56 per cent, and kidnapping by a marginal 0.17 per cent.
He added that compared to the national average, crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh have reduced considerably in 2022 as compared to 2017.
What the figures throw up is that the rate of crimes against women in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Telangana, Odisha, and West Bengal has been worse than in UP. As far as rape is concerned, while UP is placed 24th, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand have higher rates than UP, which has a large population. When it comes to outraging modesty, UP is placed at 17th position, thus becoming the 17th worst state as 16 states have fared worse.
In connection with the crime, the police have arrested SP leader Moin Khan and his associate Raju Khan.
