On Monday, Trinamool Congress emphatically condemned the alleged 'rape threat' against party General Secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee. The threat that came in a viral video was reportedly made during a protest rally against the rape and murder of a woman junior doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata.
The West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and has instructed the police to take necessary action.
Riju Dutta, the spokesman for the state unit of the Trinamool Congress, condemned the threats, saying that the accused are "a bunch of animals" masquerading as seekers of 'Justice for R.G. Kar'. Dutta labeled those behind the threats as "potential rapists and murderers," saying they do not deserve to be part of a civil society and must be brought to book for such acts.
TMC leader Derek O'Brien took to X to condemn the alleged threats. "Fight us politically with your filthy tricks. You have done it before but today you have crossed the line. Stop threatening kids. No words are enough to condemn this gutter-level threat to our National General Secretary's daughter. STOP THIS NOW, read his statement.
WBCPCR chairperson Tulika Das earlier wrote to the superintendent of Basirhat district police, asking for an action taken report of the case along with the copies of FIR and other concerned documents within two days from the receipt of the letter to enable further steps by the commission.
