Sonia Gandhi's Nomination Filing for Rajya Sabha Elections in Rajasthan Today

If elected, Sonia Gandhi will join the Rajya Sabha, following in the footsteps of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who was a member from August 1964 to February 1967.

Sonia Gandhi, the former Congress president, has made a significant move by deciding to file her nomination for the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan due to health reasons. Arriving in Jaipur early in the morning, she aims to secure a seat in the upper house, allowing her to overcome the challenges posed by regular visits to her Lok Sabha constituency. The decision was confirmed after a high-level party meeting attended by leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Mukul Wasnik, Ajay Maken, Salman Khurshid, and KC Venugopal.

Expected to file her nomination on Wednesday, Sonia Gandhi's shift to the Rajya Sabha is seen as a strategic move given her health constraints. The last date for nomination submission is February 15, with the election scheduled for February 27. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has welcomed this decision, emphasizing Sonia's long-standing connection with Rajasthan and praising her commitment to public service.

If elected, Sonia Gandhi will join the Rajya Sabha, following in the footsteps of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who was a member from August 1964 to February 1967. This move marks a departure from Sonia Gandhi's historical role as a five-time Lok Sabha MP, representing constituencies such as Amethi and Rae Bareli.

The speculations surrounding Sonia Gandhi's shift have also triggered discussions about Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's potential electoral debut, particularly for the Rae Bareli seat. However, the party leadership is yet to make a formal decision regarding Priyanka Gandhi's entry into the political arena. With 56 members of the Rajya Sabha retiring in April, including notable figures like Manmohan Singh, the political landscape is undergoing significant changes, adding anticipation and intrigue to the upcoming elections.
