In a recent Supreme Court hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta brought attention to developments regarding the suspension of Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha. Mehta informed the bench, led by CJI D.Y. Chandrachud, that Chadha had met the Rajya Sabha Chairman, indicating potential discussions and a probable appearance before the Committee in the matter.
Despite Chadha's lawyer pushing for an immediate hearing on November 28, CJI Chandrachud suggested maintaining composure and reading between the lines of Mehta's statement, implying a possible course of action.
The Solicitor General requested an adjournment in the brief hearing, awaiting a formal order from the court to determine the next listing date.
In an earlier session, the court had directed Chadha to offer an unconditional apology to Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar regarding alleged misconduct. The court assured that the apology, if tendered, would be "sympathetically" considered.
Advocate Shadan Farasat, representing Chadha, highlighted his client's lack of intent to undermine the Upper House's dignity. He emphasized Chadha's readiness to offer an apology, underscoring previous attempts to seek forgiveness and expressing willingness to do so again.
Chadha has challenged his suspension from the Rajya Sabha in the Supreme Court, asserting that the House Chairman cannot unilaterally suspend a member pending inquiry, especially when the Committee on Privileges is already investigating the same issue.
