Born in Sehor district and his hometown Budhni, Chouhan's journey in politics started in 1990 when he was first elected to the Assembly.

He then sensationally fought and won the bypoll in 1991 from the same seat. He defeated Congress' Pratap Bhanu Sharma with a huge margin.

From Budhni constituency for the first time, Shivraj Singh Chouhan was elected as a member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly in the year 1990. The same constituency has elected him as the MLA again in 2006, 2008, 2013 and 2018 and now in the thirteenth Legislative Assembly in 2023. End.

But the Congress government was short-lived as Scindia, along with 22 loyalist MLAs formed a faction and joined the BJP in March 2020, clearing the path for Chouhan's fourth term as CM.

Though facing strong anti-incumbency, BJP went on to regain the lead and emerge victorious in these Assembly polls in 2023. Last year, on December 3, Chouhan, however, handed the chair to Mohan Yadav as new CM.
