Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a respected member of the Calcutta High Court, has declared his intention to resign on Tuesday.
Justice Gangopadhyay has been presiding over significant cases in the state, including the cash-for-school job case.
In an interview with a regional television channel on Sunday, he revealed his plan to submit his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday.
The Justice expressed his desire to engage in a broader range of activities, stating, "If I align with any political party and receive a nomination, I will certainly consider it."
Scheduled to retire from judicial services in August 2024, Justice Gangopadhyay is currently involved in adjudicating cases related to labor affairs and industrial relations.
In announcing his decision, he launched a strong criticism against the Trinamool Congress, alleging corruption.
"The state is experiencing a dire situation. There's a culture of theft and corruption prevailing. As a Bengali, I cannot condone it. I have no faith in the ability of the current state rulers to serve the people," remarked Justice Gangopadhyay.
He attributed his decision to the challenge posed by the ruling administration. "I extend my gratitude to the ruling party for presenting me with this challenge," he remarked.
