President Droupadi Murmu has named BJP MLA-elect Rekha Gupta the Chief Minister of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi.
In addition to her, six MLAs will be sworn in as ministers. A gazette notification was issued on Thursday by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs announcing that the appointments would be from the date they took oath of office.
Rekha Gupta, a first-time legislator from Shalimar Bagh, is set to become Delhi’s fourth woman Chief Minister. She will take the oath at a grand event at Ramlila Ground. "The President is pleased to appoint Mrs. Rekha Gupta as the Chief Minister, National Capital Territory of Delhi, with effect from the date she is sworn in," read the notification signed by Praveen Kumar Rai, Joint Secretary. The notification also named six MLAs who would take on ministerial positions. They are:
- Parvesh Sahib Singh
- Ashish Sood
- Manjinder Singh Sirsa
- Ravinder Indraj Singh
- Kapil Mishra
- Pankaj Kumar Singh
To mark the onset of BJP's rule in Delhi, elaborate preparations are on to hold a ceremonial oath-taking at Ramlila Maidan, which is likely to see huge public participation.
The ceremony will be high-profile, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Cabinet members, and Chief Ministers from other states to be present. Rekha Gupta, the Chief Minister-designate, was deeply thankful to Prime Minister Modi and the party leadership for giving her this responsibility.
"I thank our party leadership, PM Modi, and the people of Delhi for their faith and trust. A major change is going to come in Delhi, and a golden era would begin in the city. My top priority is to implement PM Modi's vision and keep our promises to the people," Gupta said.
She also accepted the trust PM Modi has shown on her by stressing that her career could be an example to millions of women. "PM Narendra Modi has put great faith in a humble party worker and daughter like me. I will not disappoint him. My career is an example that a common middle-class woman can become a leader within the party," she added.
In the just-concluded Delhi Assembly polls, the BJP won 48 of the 70 seats, while the outgoing Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) retained 22 seats. The Congress, for the third time in a row, did not get any seats in the Assembly.
